BALTIMORE, MD (June 18, 2010) - Today, the Maryland Transit Administration (MTA) announced the start of $3.5 million dollars in upgrades at the Mondawmin Transit Center to enhance its appearance, improve customer communication, and increase safety.
The MTA is advising customers that renovations will close the bus loop at the transit center and mean new temporary stops for bus passengers and pathways for Local Bus and Metro Subway customers.
The project was timed to coincide with the end of the public school year. The bus loop is scheduled to re-open in late August before classes resume in the fall. The remainder of the work will be completed by October.
Among the improvements being made at the Transit Center are new lighting, new bus shelters, a refurbished canopy, renovated elevator tower, improved pedestrian pathways and ramps, new signs at pedestrian crosswalks, and a newly repaved bus loop.
Nearly 6,000 Metro Subway riders use the Mondawmin Transit Center, making it one of the Metro Subway system's busiest. The Center also serves 11 bus routes. "We want the Mondawmin Transit Center to be customer friendly, safe and up to date, in keeping with the substantial investment underway in the Mondawmin Community," said MTA Administrator Ralign T. Wells. "These enhancements show our commitment to providing our passengers with state-of-the art facilities, while making good use of federal dollars that provide local jobs."
During the construction work buses will board and drop off passengers at stops on Liberty Heights Avenue and Reisterstown Road. Temporary bus stops and pathways have been created to reroute bus traffic and passengers.
MTA Transit Ambassadors will be on hand to direct passengers. Signs will also be posted to help customers reach their destinations.
The $3.5 million project is funded by a combination of American Recovery and Reinvestment Act funds, other federal funds and State funds. ARRA funds are approximately $2 million of the total.
