FRA, MDOT, AMTRAK AND BALTIMORE CITY TO HOLD
OPEN HOUSES TO PROVIDE UPDATES
ON BALTIMORE AND POTOMAC TUNNEL STUDY

April 4, 2016

The Federal Railroad Administration (FRA), Maryland Department of Transportation (MDOT), Amtrak and the Baltimore City Department of Transportation will hold two open houses in April at separate Baltimore City high schools to update the public on the Baltimore and Potomac (B&P) Tunnel Project.

At the open houses, project staff will: provide project updates; share information heard at previous public meetings; respond to frequently asked questions; and communicate next steps.  Open houses will be held:

Wednesday, April 6, 2016                      Saturday, April 16, 2016
5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.                           10:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.
Frederick Douglass High School            Carver Vocational-Technical High School
2301 Gwynns Falls Parkway                  2201 W. Presstman St.
Baltimore, MD  21207                            Baltimore, MD 21216

The open houses are the latest in more than a dozen meetings held to inform the public about the tunnel project, a federally-funded engineering and environmental study examining improvements and alternatives to the 143-year-old, two-track tunnel, between the West Baltimore MARC Station and Penn Station along Amtrak’s Northeast Corridor (NEC) in Baltimore.

The B&P Tunnel, which opened in 1873, is used by Amtrak, Maryland’s MARC Commuter Rail trains and Norfolk Southern Railway freight trains.  Track geometry and outdated tunnel design significantly impede rail movement along the busy NEC, creating a bottleneck that impacts about 140 Amtrak, MARC commuter and freight trains daily.

The $60 million study includes development and evaluation of various alternatives based on the need to enhance rail safety and to improve capacity, reliability and travel time for commuter, freight and intercity passenger rail service on the NEC.
