Hogan Administration Announces Opening of Long-Awaited
New Us 301/Md 304 Interchange

Major Safety Project Opens Overpass Before School Starts; All Interchange Ramps and Complete Benefit to Motorists Expected this Fall

August 7, 2017

Annapolis, MD – The Hogan Administration today announced the opening of a new overpass at the US 301 (Blue Star Memorial Highway) and MD 304 (Ruthsburg Road) interchange in Queen Anne’s County, creating a significant safety benefit. The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) will shift MD 304 traffic onto the new bridge over US 301 on Tuesday, August 15, eliminating the at-grade crossing of the two highways.

“Building, maintaining, and fixing Maryland’s roads and bridges is crucial for highway safety across the state,” said Governor Larry Hogan. “This long-awaited project will directly benefit thousands of Marylanders and visitors in Queen Anne’s County and the entire Eastern Shore.”

Construction is proceeding ahead of schedule as three of the four new interchange ramps have been completed; work continues on the ramp from MD 304 to northbound US 301. The entire project will be complete this fall.  The overpass features sidewalks and wide shoulders for bicycles. Roundabouts at each end of the overpass will improve traffic flow and reduce the risk of crashes. The project also features a J-turn intersection safety upgrade at US 301 and MD 305 just to the north and a 25-space park and ride lot off MD 304 adjacent to Tidewater Drive.

David A. Bramble of Chestertown is the contractor for the $34 million interchange construction that replaces the at-grade intersection and improves safety for the 22,000 motorists on US 301 and the 5,200 motorists who use MD 304 each day. Commercial trucks comprise one-quarter of the US 301 traffic. A local community partner, SO4S (Support Overpass 4 Students), advocated for the funding of the project.
