Risk Management

Overview

Risk Management is a management discipline with the goal of protecting Maryland Department of Transportation employees, assets, and the financial integrity of the organization by reducing or eliminating the potential for loss. Risk Management is the identification, assessment, and prioritization of risks followed by coordinated and economical application of resources to minimize, monitor and control the probability and/or impact of unfortunate events or to maximize the realization of opportunities. The Risk Management/Safety Program at Headquarters is designed to identify and address areas of accident potential, institute appropriate corrective measures, and minimize environmental factors that may contribute to on-the-job injuries.

Safety is essential to all business functions of the Maryland Department of Transportation (MDOT) and is never compromised under any circumstance.  It is the intent of the Maryland Department of Transportation, the Secretary’s Office (MDOT TSO) to provide a safe environment for all employees. Our employees are our most valuable assets, and their safety and health is our first priority.  MDOT is committed to creating a workplace that is safe, healthy and injury-free. It is also our intent to properly manage any incidents that occur so as to minimize injury and other forms of loss.

Challenges arise because people perceive or assess risks in different ways at different times. Everyone must always realize the Risk Management and Safety are responsibilities we all share.
