Department Invites the Public to Go For a Ride, Join Events to Celebrate Biking

HANOVER, MD (May 1, 2025) – In celebration of National Bike Month, the Maryland Department of Transportation (MDOT) today announced a series of events throughout May highlighting the importance of bike safety, equitable access and healthy lifestyles. The Department is inviting everyone to trade four wheels for two as part of the month-long celebration. Bike Month encourages people of all ages to bike and embrace biking as a fun, healthy and sustainable activity while also highlighting connectivity across the state.

“For many riding a bike is an essential part of life to travel between home, transit stops, work and life’s opportunities,” said Maryland Transportation Secretary Paul J. Wiedefeld. “National Bike Month and Bike to Work Week serve as reminders that the roads are for all users, including those who walk, bike and roll. With more bicyclists heading out during the warmer months, we remind drivers to please share the road, give them room and pass when it is safe to move over into an adjacent lane. Together we can all arrive at our destinations safely.”

Bike Month events support MDOT’s commitment to providing safe, reliable, accessible, equitable and sustainable transportation options to all Marylanders. This year’s events include:

  • Bike & Roll to School Day on May 7 – This national celebration promotes safe routes to school. See if your school is registered on the national walk, bike and roll to school website.
  • MDOT in Motion Webinar: Bike Month and Commuter Choice Maryland on May 8 – Join MDOT’s Office of Active Transportation and Micromobility for a live webinar detailing Bike Month activities, commuter opportunities and tips/tricks for traveling in Maryland. Register here.
  • Bike to Work Week from May 12-18 – All week-long MDOT is sponsoring events across the State such as group rides and pit stops to promote bike commuting. Find your closest event at Bike to Work Central Maryland and Bike to Work DC.
The Maryland Department of Transportation is proud to celebrate Bike Month and advance initiatives that aim to create safer spaces for all road users.  As part of those efforts, MDOT recently announced the implementation of the department-wide Complete Streets policy, a deliberate approach to planning, designing and constructing streets that are safe for all users, including cyclists and pedestrians of all ages and abilities.

Bike Month events also complement MDOT’s Serious about Safety program – a sharpening of focus on safety through an enhanced, department-wide initiative to further drive MDOT’s safety goals and save lives.

Don’t wait for summer to hit your exercise goals, make the most of spring, grab your bike and head outside! Everyone is encouraged to share their rides on social media using the hashtags #BikeMonth, #BikeRolltoSchoolDay, #BTWD2025 and #MDOTinMotion to inspire others.
