MDOT’s new Transit Incentive Program is making it easier to ride the bus and train in the Greater Baltimore area with two new incentives.

  1. CharmPass for Commuters: During select promotional periods, new transit users can download the CharmPass mobile app and receive FREE transit passes.
  2. FareShare for Employers: Employers can receive up to $3,000 to purchase transit passes for your employees through the FareShare program.

These incentives are administered by the Maryland Transit Administration (MTA), the transit provider for the Greater Baltimore Region.

During select promotional periods, MTA is offering multiple FREE transit passes to new transit riders.

  1. Be a first-time (new) user of the MTA transit system.
  2. Download the CharmPass mobile application and set up an account with email, name, and phone number, and select the desired type of transit pass.
  3. Once the account is verified (within 48 hours), participants will receive the transit passes loaded directly onto their CharmPass account.
  4. Travel to, from, or within the Greater Baltimore region using MTA transit services (using the Baltimore local transit system, including bus, metro and light rail, as well as commuter bus and MARC). Travel may occur any time of the day; any day of the week.
  5. Share feedback by taking part in periodic brief surveys about your transit experience. Your input will help us better understand rider needs, improve services, and enhance future transit options across the region.

Additional rules and restrictions apply. For example, the free transit passes expire after 90 days and CharmPass products are not redeemable for cash or transferable to other users.

Calling all Employers! Help Your Employees Get Their FareShare

Attract, retain, and ensure reliable transportation for employees. This incentive provides employers in the Greater Baltimore area up to $3,000 ($1,000 per month over three continuous months) to offset the cost of purchasing transit fares for their employees. The incentive is delivered as a credit on the employer’s CharmPass account.

As a perk of the FareShare incentive, your organization will be registered as an MDOT Commuter Choice Maryland Employer Partner Program. The Employer Partner Program offers FREE resources and tools to help your organization offer other commuter benefits to your employees, as well as gain recognition as a company that leads by example.

  1. Confirm your eligibility. Employers must have locations or employment centers in the Greater Baltimore area accessible to MTA stations through Local transit services, Commuter Bus and MARC.
  2. Express interest in joining the FareShare Program and email us at [email protected] - we will set up a meeting to discuss options.
  3. Fill out a quick questionnaire to set up an agreement with us. Note that we aim to have employers enroll in the MTA FareShare program by the 15 of the month prior to their starting month. Employers must submit their next month’s purchase by the 25th of the month.
  4. MTA will verify the employer’s account, apply the incentive as a credit, and load the selected fare products directly to the participant’s digital CharmPass app account.
  5. Employees must access the CharmPass app and set up an account to use their employer provided pass. New riders will have access to the CharmPass incentive during select periods! Remember, free transit passes expire after 90 days. Share feedback by taking part in periodic brief surveys about your transit experience. Employee input will help us better understand rider needs, improve services, and enhance future transit options across the region.

GRH provides commuters who regularly (twice a week) carpool, vanpool, bike, walk or take transit to work with a FREE and reliable ride home when one of life’s unexpected emergencies arise. Commuters may take advantage of GRH up to six times per year to get home for unexpected emergencies such as a personal illness or a sick child. GRH can also be used for unscheduled overtime when your employer mandates that you must stay late.
